Beauty Beyond: Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil
Imagine walking across miles of brilliant white sand dunes and suddenly coming upon a crystal-clear turquoise lagoon.
No river flowing into it. No ocean spilling over the dunes.
Just rain.
This is Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil, and it may be one of the most unusual landscapes on Earth. Oh and you can pronounce it like this: Lençóis Maranhenses = len-SOYS mah-rah-NYEN-sees)
During the rainy season, which stretches roughly from January into June or July, enormous amounts of rain fall over the dunes. The water filters through the sand until it meets a less-permeable layer underneath, allowing freshwater to collect in the valleys between the dunes. Suddenly, this vast landscape of white sand becomes dotted with thousands of shimmering blue and green pools.
And these aren’t muddy little rain puddles.
They’re beautiful, clear freshwater lagoons—some large enough to swim in—surrounded by nothing but rolling sand and sky.
Then the rains stop.
For a while, the lagoons remain, full and sparkling beneath the Brazilian sun. Gradually, as the dry season continues, many begin to shrink until eventually they disappear altogether. Then the rains return and the entire landscape begins again.
How incredible is that? 😍
The dunes themselves are constantly moving, shaped by the wind, which means this isn’t even exactly the same landscape from one year to the next. UNESCO recognized Lençóis Maranhenses as a World Heritage Site in 2024, describing a landscape of both temporary and permanent lagoons woven through one of South America’s most extraordinary dune systems.
I think this is why I’m so fascinated by places like this.
We can get very accustomed to what we think Earth is supposed to look like.
Mountains here. Oceans there. Deserts over there.
And then Earth throws us something like freshwater lagoons appearing between enormous white sand dunes.
Just because it can.
Maybe that's the whole point of Beauty Beyond.
There is still so much here capable of making us stop and say:
Wait. That’s real?
And yes.
It really is. And wow is it beautiful!
